eCoils Win Frost & Sullivan Award

2006 Frost & Sullivan Award for Product Differentiation Innovation

Award Recipient: MEDRAD Inc.

Frost & Sullivan is pleased to present the 2006 Product Differentiation Innovation Award to MEDRAD Inc, for their full line of eCoils, which offer unprecedented MR imaging of endorectal regions such as the prostate, colon, bladder, and cervix. Formerly named MRInnervu, the eCoils offerings are the dominant internal coils for colorectal imaging used for both 1.0T and 1.5T MR scanners. Nearly all major MR scanner manufacturers include MEDRAD’s eCoils in their coil inventory. The eCoils line has also expanded into the 3T scanner market to include the first colorectal coils for the fast-growing 3T segment.

The predominant coil offerings from third-party manufacturers are mainly head, neck, spine, breast, and extremity coils for knees, wrists and shoulders. MEDRAD introduced endorectal coils in order to effectively visualize the pelvis and lower abdomen structures without the need for invasive surgical procedures, such as laparoscopy or endoscopies. Through its unique position in the market as a provider of endorectal coils, the eCoils line has been quickly integrated into the coil offerings of many leading MR scanner manufacturers. The product line includes disposable prostate, colorectal and cervix endorectal coils for 1.5T MR systems, as well as the new upcoming offering for a prostate endorectal coil for 3T scanners. These coils offer significantly higher signal-to-noise ratios than traditional pelvic coils, as well as assist physicians in diagnosing tumor stages of various cancers.

The importance of MR-based diagnoses of pelvic and endorectal examinations is especially heightened with the projected increase in prostate cancer incidence rates in males and colorectal cancers in both males and females. According to data from the American Cancer Institute, the estimated new cases for 2005 of prostate cancer in males are expected to be 33 percent while colorectal cancer incidence rates at approximately 11 percent in both males and females. The number of deaths from prostate, colorectal and urinary bladder cancers is expected to top 70,000 among males in 2005. However, the five-year survival rate for patients with malignant tumors discovered early and localized to organ of origin is over 90% for colorectal, bladder, cervical, or prostate cancers. The eCoils line of MR internal coils from MEDRAD is helping to lower death rates attributed to endorectal cancers as well as identify physiological abnormalities of the prostate and pelvic organs that can lead to incontinence, erectile dysfunction and neuromuscular dysfunction of the lower abdomen and pelvis.

MEDRAD’s clear position as a leading provider of both surface and internal coils have contributed to consistently increasing company revenues for the past decade, which topped $400 million for 2005. In addition to eCoils, the company also has an array of surface coils for multi-channel, phased array coils for neurovascular, extremity and torso imaging.

Frost & Sullivan is proud to recognize MEDRAD Inc. and their eCoils line with the 2006 Product Differentiation Innovation Award in the MRI coils market.
